UNESCO Chairs on Habitat and Cities

The aims of the Chairs are to:
  • increase critical knowledge of technical responses to problems related to urban planning, architecture and built environment with specialised NGOs, universities and private institutions;
  • improve institutional dialogue between City Professionals, NGOs, universities' research centres, social movements and public organizations.

Chair UNESCO-ITESO in Urban Management and Sustainable Urban Planning

The Chair was created in 1998 at the ITESO University in Guadalajara, Mexico. Its work is based on an academic programme which shares the same objectives as the MOST "City professionals" project. The Chair offers the possibility of creating new linkages between public instances and civil society based on the concertation among different urban social actors, as well as the generation and dissemination of interdisciplinary knowledge.

UNESCO Chair in Landscape and Environmental Design at the University of Montreal-CUPEUM (Canada)

The Chair’s work focuses on social development and cultural characterization of landscapes and territories, as well as improvement practices and plans (in landscape architecture, architecture, and urbanplanning and design). Research targets three areas: urban landscapes, rurality, and the environment. In addition, teaching activities give priority to higher education in landscape architecture and international mobility of professors and students.

UNESCO-ENTPE Chair in Urban Policies and Citizenship

The Chair was created in February 2007 at the École Nationale des Travaux Publics de l'État (ENTPE) in Lyon, France. The objective of this Chair is to structure an international university network to foster exchange within the academic community, in order to question and compare the capacity of metropolitan societies to integrate this tendency towards the pluralization of urban decision-making platforms in different institutional, cultural, political and economic contexts.

UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Urban Development for Asia and the Pacific

Established in August 2008 at the University of Newcastle (Australia), the Chair has the mission to conduct pragmatic and innovative strategic research, as well as to offer advice and capacity building in order to support sustainable urban development in the Asia-Pacific Region. In cooperation with governments and academics, the Chair will examine the possibilities of green urbanism and will identify better ways to harmonize the rapid urbanization processes which characterize the region.

UNESCO Chair in Social and Spatial Inclusion of International Migrants: Urban Policies and Practice

The UNESCO Chair in Social and Spatial Inclusion of International Migrants (SSIIM) was created in September 2008 at the University of Venice (Università Iuav di Venezia) in Italy. The Chair will conduct multidisciplinary comparative research on international migrants in urban areas, highlighting the principal factors of promoting social and spatial inclusion of international migrants in different urban settings. The Chair aims at exchanging good policies and practices and fostering awareness on the inclusion of international migrants.
