Globalization, competing cities and citizenship

As cities have made their historical come-back at the heart of geopolitics and the global economy, the idea of global competition has become prevalent in the discourse of both commentators and urban managers. Over the last few years, urban policies have been largely influenced by the rhetoric of competition. The Chair has dedicated an observation programme to this new formatting of urban policies designed to position cities within the global competition. Its purpose is to deepen our understanding of the driving forces underpinning this trend, and of its consequences for social policies or programmes promoting citizenship. Its effects on urban and social segregation are given particular attention.
